On Friday the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission (COGCC) made it official, production in 2013 hit a mark not seen since 1956. Nearly 60 years ago the oil companies working in Colorado extracted almost 62 million barrels of crude.

The first oil found in Colorado was discovered near Canon City in 1862 and by 1920 there was ample evidence of large deposits in the state's northeast quarter, but it never developed into a major production center like Oklahoma and Texas.

In 2013, the state produced just over 64 million barrels which beats the previous record by more than two million barrels. The new numbers represent a massive increase compared to the 2012 total of a little more than 49 million barrels.

The record-breaking results are all the more remarkable when one considers that Colorado has one of the nation's strongest regulatory programs.

Much of the action is in an area, centered on Weld County, that is known as the Denver-Julesburg Basin. Wells in Weld County accounted for more than 80 percent of the state's production in 2013 and the two largest energy companies working in the Denver-Julesburg Basin have recently said that they expect their holdings will eventually produce more than four billion barrels of crude.

Colorado will never be the kind of production powerhouse that Texas and North Dakota have become but anyone working in the oil industry in the "Centennial State" can look forward to a very bright future.
